Swap time! I'm now in a tribe split 4/2/2 based on old tribes. I've got Lion, who I'm tight with, and I'm looking forward to working with Hedgehog too. Mongoose isn't as exciting but I wouldn't turn him down by any means. Have to get to know the new guys before making a plan.

I spoke too soon with the above, it's actually a nine-person tribe but only 8 avatars were shown at first. It's me, Lion, Hedgehog, and Mongoose from old terrestria, Frog and Capybara from old Aquaria, and Butterfly, Moth, and Snowy Owl from Aeria. I've talked to all the new people a little so far; Frog seems cagey and kind of hard to connect to, Moth seems really cool, and I don't have a verdict on the others yet.
I bit the bullet and told the terrestria people about my idol. I would much rather have kept it to myself, but the alternative (them finding out about it from Frog and Capybara) sounds awful and makes me seem shifty af. Lion and I are tight, and I think I want to work with Hedgehog and Mongoose still as well.
A few decisions to make: how should I handle the Aquaria people, and which people should I work with? I could ask just outright ask Frog and Capybara if Leopard Seal told them I had an idol, but that gets very messy very fast and probably doesn't lead to a happy ending. Or I could just not mention it and keep it in a cold-war scenario. Or option 3, lie and claim I already used it, or that Leopard Seal was full of crap and that actually they're the one with an idol. The risk there is that they see through it, and I don't know that I'm a good liar. I'm definitely not a good liar in person.
Who to work with depends on who I click with. As I said above, Moth is promising and Frog is bad vibes for first impression. Broken English at late night.

I just dropped a big paragraph about the 30-years war on moth, and now I'm regretting it a little; probably a couple line breaks would have made it less scary looking, but can't change it now.

So my verdict is that I like all of the air people and don't really care for the water people. Frog's been hard for me to connect with; Lion said he'd had no trouble and was just talking game with him immediately, while I was trying to start with non-game. Capybara is fine but kind of boring sadly; I wouldn't turn him down if he came in a package deal but I don't want to grab him individually. I've really liked talking to Moth, Snowy Owl, and Butterfly; they all seem really approachable and friendly, with a balance between caginess and oversharing.
I think I actually like those air people more than some of my old tribe - I'm not super sure about Hedgehog these days. She's cool, but I just get a bad feeling about her for some reason. Lion is my tightest ally, and I think he trusts me a lot too. Mongoose has grown on me, we still talk mostly about fluff but I don't think he's a liability or someone who would flip right now, and I think he has at least some trust with me.

Lion brought up that it would be bad optics to vote out all the Aquaria people. That's true, but... it's also true if we vote Aeria people out, or Terrestria people out. Not sure if he didn't think of that, or if he just implicitly would prefer to work with Frog and Capy. I'm tight with him, so I think I'll gently raise it to him in private.

So we lost after all. Please, God, don't let my idol make me a target. Such a rich man's problem, I know.
I talked to Lion and he said he meant pagonging and not just a single elimination. That's an acceptable answer to me as long as he sticks to his word.
The more Hedgehog and I talk the more it's becoming painfully clear that we just don't have a whole lot in common. If it were just me feeling meh about her, that's not a huge deal. But I'm pretty sure she isn't too enthused by me, which means she'd be really willing to sacrifice me down the line. I'm not gonna push to get her out this tribal, I think it's too soon to split us up and I don't think Mongoose and Lion would go with me; definitely have to think about it a little further down the line though.
Frog has seemingly been pretty successful at making connections and is consistently great in the challenges, so I'd say he's a big threat. But do we need him to not lose? Sure wish I knew what the site meta was on getting rid of challenge beasts. Capybara seems like a non-issue; unless he's secretly masterminding everything in the game, I think he'll just be a steady vote for someone without much shot at winning.
Moth seems like the biggest social threat here pretty easily, and isn't as strong in challenges. But I really want to work with him, and if I vote him out I have no one to talk to about history and linguistics anymore. Further, I have zero idea whether Moth is good at planning moves by himself or not. Both Owl and Butterfly seem like good social players too, and seem just better at survivor than Capybara does.
Conservation Status wise, my list then is: Least Concern: Capybara, Mongoose, Lion Near Threatened: Hedgehog, Owl, Butterfly Endangered: Moth Critically Endangered: Frog

Yes, definitely Civ! I play Civ V pretty often, usually on Prince because I'm kind of a wimp. I don't have VI, because it's expensive and I still enjoy V. Roguelikes are also my jam, I've been a fan of them ever since I played NetHack in high school. That game's a paradox - its design feels so bad and yet so good at the same time. The other classical-type ones I play regularly are Crawl and some ADOM; never really got into Angband, too grindy for my liking. Non-classical roguelikes I don't play as much, but Binding of Isaac Rebirth is a lot of fun. I've heard some great things about Hades, and I'll probably end up picking it up at some point. Does it have permadeath? I'm kind of a snob about that, if you can reload after dying then it's a rogue-lite in my book! I don't have a ton of faith in finding good people around where I live right now, but once I finally move back to a civilized place (and we get closer to the Old Normal again) I'd love to find a group on meetup. Maybe even get back into Magic the Gathering too, haven't played that since high school either. I wasn't super happy with my performance honestly; sure, I did one of those 500 word essays no one wants to do, but I feel like my brain dropped out of my head looking at all the other tasks. Hopefully we did enough to win despite that. Can't find a good funny one right now, but here's one for a placeholder.

That was pretty much THE clusterfuck of the 17th century. I forgot to mention, but overlapping with that war was the Dutch war for independence from Spain, and that fighting was taking place very close to 30 years war stuff for a while. The reasons and justification stuff is complicated. For common people there were two main kinds of propaganda, the religious type, and the political type - basically, back in 1555 there was the peace of Augsburg that guaranteed that the protestants of the time could stay protestant and any local prince could choose their religion. But the phrasing was deliberately really vague, and every side interpreted it differently. So political propaganda on the protestant side said that the Emperor was being a tyrant and denying their rights, and the catholics said the protestants were dangerous rebels going after more than they were entitled to. For the rulers, dynastic politics were a huge part. Austria wanted to consolidate power; the smaller German princes wanted to weaken the Austrians and become de-facto independent; France wanted to knock Austria and Spain down a peg and become the baddest badass in Europe; Denmark wanted to grab a few rich towns in the north to increase their baltic trade dominance, and Sweden joined in to establish a bunch of colonies in NE Germany. When their enemies happened to be the same religion as them, they would make up some other reason and tell their own people that to justify the war. Re: Fire Emblem, I mostly play the middle difficulties myself. The harder modes take a bit more planning for each chapter than I usually want to do. Which ones have you played? Re: TF2, I do still play it occasionally, and have fun with it now that I'm not a freak about it. The only downside is that there seem to be a lot more aimbotters and cheaters these days, which is annoying. Re: Languages, Portuguese and Spanish are very similar. Their vocabulary is extremely close, much closer than Spanish is to French for instance. Verb conjugations are almost the same; grammar and syntax are very similar, but Spanish uses the subjunctive mood way way more than Portuguese. Pronunciation depends on the type of Portuguese (European, general Brazilian, or regional Brazilian), but all of them are noticeably different from euro-Spanish, and they have nasalized vowels similar to the ones French has. Sorry for the huge post, but those are topics I actually know about and like to talk about! Here's one that's a bit better. This is a pretty standard post size for my convo with Moth. I would worry about going on too much, but I literally asked if it was too much and they asked for more.

So what I'm hearing is that it's between Capybara and Snowy Owl, with Hedgehog saying she heard from Snowy that someone had put Mongoose's name out there. I haven't heard my name from anyone, but it's not impossible that it's me? If Frog or Capy do know about my idol, then they could easily have gone to Aeria and put together an anti-terrestria bloc based on none of the four of us wanting to vote for each other today. Ugh... this is why I don't play Mafia anymore, I hate the feeling of being a detriment to my own team. It would feel terrible to play my idol so early, but going home would feel bad too. Wasting it would make me look like a doofus. Maybe I play it on Mongoose tonight... he'd be an inoffensive vote for the others, and I would hope that Mongoose would appreciate me saving him. This would make me more of a target for having a publicly known strong ally, but I would lose the target that comes with having an idol. Hmm...

Butterfly tells me Capybara is pushing my name, which makes the decision on who to vote really easy. I was already wanting that, but now it's for sure my vote.
I believe in Lion and Mongoose and at least somewhat believe in Hedgehog. Snowy has outright come to me offering to vote Capy, and since Butterfly didn't have to tell me my name was out there I don't think he'd vote against me. With that in mind I'm not going to play my idol. If I'm right, cool; if I'm wrong, I'll be joining the ranks of you wonderful spectators and learn a valuable lesson for next time.

This vote is such a glorious mess, good God.
No way in hell Mongoose is going, it's either me or Capybara at this point. Scary as that is, I'm still not going to play it because I think we have enough numbers. If I go, it'll be because Capybara and his group outplayed me by being more convincing, and I can accept that.

I'm officially in with Snowy Owl, and we've been telling each other pretty much everything. We're kindred spirits. At this point I believe that I'll be fine without playing the idol, and that everyone bar Frog and Capy are voting with me. Famous last words, of course.
