It was fantastic for running the game but oh my god designing the game was a horrible process.

There was an old modding guide at one point that is wildly out of date. Most people have their own way of modding, it depends what you want to do. But you should have an idea of what you're designing around, whether you're building the whole thing around the theme you've chosen, or you really want to do a very particular mechanic, or design for specific playstyles/players. One of my games was entirely designed around the idea of, what if your actions throughout the entire game mattered. Some parts of that game were decent, but I also tend to design bastard games so I'm not necessarily the best advice giver there

one option could be to design along with some experienced mods to see how they go about it
usually i think folks start with general game structure (number of players, when to have tribe swaps and how those will work, twists) and then add challenges after, but idk if there's a substitute right now for just doing it and hearing what others think about what you made
